Eamonn Powers
Old Dominion University

The world is constantly in motion; the clouds, the rivers and oceans, the sun and stars, and us. It’s my belief that this perpetual motion has made humanity particularly cognizant of origins, directions, travel, and destinations. Planning, navigation, and progress. And in our pursuit of progress, we are consistently interested in emergent solutions which are often facilitated by technology of our own creation. So too is my path within the field of instructional design.

Hi, my name is Eamonn Powers. I am a doctoral student at Old Dominion University where I study Instructional Design & Technology. My primary area of focus is immersive media design with a special emphasis in discovering how immersive tools can be used to improve transfer of training to real world environments; this includes anything and everything between types of immersive experience (PC, VR, AR, XR) and how data is captured within these environments to provide specific performance based assessment. While this is my primary area of interest, I’ve also conducted or participated in several studies across a number of topics including MOOCs, word-based automated data analytics, and recently at the 2020 AECT conference I presented work I’d done outlining the successful implementation of an enterprise learning management system while using a systems thinking approach.

While I’m not researching with my peers and advisor at Old Dominion, I work as the Learning Experience Architect at FlightSafety International. In that role, I lead the design efforts for all training materials and instructional interventions for aircraft pilot and maintenance training programs throughout the enterprise.

I’m interested in this position because I’ve had very good experiences speaking with or working with other members of the GSA, I think the work the GSA is doing is novel and worthwhile, and I’m interested in expanding my experience with people from different backgrounds and interests.

I think I’d be a good fit for this position because I’m a passionate researcher, with (I think) a healthy variety of practical experience, whom is incredibly interested in utilizing new and emerging technologies to help people around the world learn in ways that are both engaging and deeply meaningful. I appreciate your consideration in my nomination and I look forward to serving!

Ever Forward, Eamonn
