About Joi
I am a Professor in the School of Information Science & Learning Technologies (iSchool at the University of Missouri).  I assumed the role of Associate Dean for Engagement and Outreach in the College of Education after 5.5 years as the Director for the iSchool.  In addition, I am a faculty member in the MU Informatics Institute and an affiliated faculty member in the Black Studies Department.

I received a B.S. degree in Computer Science and M.S. degree in Management from North Carolina State University focusing on a minor in Management Information Systems. After teaching for two years in the Department of Computer Information Systems at Shaw University, I turned my attention to earning a Ph.D. in Instructional Technology from the University of Georgia – with an emphasis area of Management Information Systems. I completed two leadership programs: Management Development Program (MDP) at Harvard University and the Academic Leadership Development for the Southeastern Conference (SEC).

It is an honor to be selected as a candidate for President-Elect of AECT. My membership has provided essential knowledge, experience, and networks that have contributed to my professional growth.  During the past 20 years, the following roles have prepared me for the responsibilities of President/President-Elect:

  • Minorities in Media Affiliate (restructured as Culture, Learning, and Technology Division): Secretary/Treasurer, Vice president, and President.
  • Training and Performance Division (renamed Organizational Training and Performance): Member at Large, Vice President, and President.
  • Board of Directors: At-Large Member, Interim Executive Secretary, Executive Secretary
  • Nominating Committee

Vision and Goals
As stated in AECT’s strategic plan, the vision is to become “the premier international organization in educational technology…”  To support this vision, I plan to build upon the great work of past and present leadership while focusing on our strengths.  To effectively lead, the President must demonstrate a passion for the organization and cultivate an environment that contributes to innovation and inclusion.  We can pursue the following goals:

  1. Provide recommendations and solutions to national and international issues related to using technology to improve learning and performance.
  2. Develop more opportunities for conference papers to be indexed and included in Web of Science and Scopus.
  3. Create more opportunities for a degree or program endorsements similar to AECT’s certificate endorsement program.
  4. Provide professional development to help members navigate our profession, and leadership development for members aspiring to serve in administrative positions.
  5. Increase affiliate status with premier and international organizations to support relationships and opportunities to attract members within multi-disciplinary research.
  6. Support Open Educational Resources as an additional method to promote important work of our members.

As President, I would implement processes to understand current and future needs for continuous improvement. Determining activities and programs that provide value for national and international members will create a more inclusive and diverse organizational culture.

As we continue to develop strategies for membership recruitment and engagement, encouraging new special interest groups to support emerging trends can assist the organization with being more agile with the evolving technological innovations within education and training. By providing additional focus on our multi-cultural and international membership, our community of researchers, designers, practitioners, and administrators will be better prepared to serve a myriad of learner needs throughout the world. International recognition as the premier organization can be achieved by continuing to increase our international affiliations and providing more opportunities to showcase international scholars.

If elected, I would support additional communication methods to keep members aware of current activities and to market our organization to non-members.  My core values embrace transparency, authenticity, high standards, and accountability. I am excited about the opportunity to collectively work with AECT members as we promote our discipline.
