Systems Thinking & Change
President Elect

Angela Doucet Rand
University of South Alabama

My teaching and learning philosophy:

As a librarian, I promote the libraryís role to serve as an adaptable and centralized entity for an academic community.  I believe the teacherís role is to guide the students through the learning process to help them grow confidence in their ability to learn. I embrace a constructivist philosophy of teaching and learning that is student-centered.  Students come to the library with differing attitudes and experiences towards accessing information.  It is my job to analyze the need, and design products and environments that best facilitate and promote learning to this diverse body of students.  Collaborative and social experiences provide an essential foundation for this kind of individual cognitive engagement.  We work hard to achieve that!

Angela Doucet Rand is a life-long learner, director of the Marx Library at the University of South Alabama, and for two years during the COVID pandemic she also served as the interim director of the Baugh Biomedical Library.  She holds an MLIS from University of Southern Mississippi and a PhD in Instructional Design and Development from the University of South Alabama.  Additionally, Angela holds a certificate in Human Performance Improvement.  In her current position she leads, manages, and supervises library policies and operations.  Additionally she designs information literacy instructional products for undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in the College of Education at USA. As an adjunct instructor,  Angela taught online graduate courses in Instructional Design at multiple universities.  Her professional interests led her from librarianship to instructional design and human performance improvement. Her research interests include systems thinking, social network analysis and bibliometrics, professional development, and media and information literacy.  Most recently, Angela has embarked on a journey to learn how to use big data and R programming to explore new and better ways to help people learn.

In a previous career Angela worked as the Reference and Computer Lab librarian at the Orange Beach Public Library in Alabama.  Angela is a retired veteran of the US Air Force where she worked as an aircraft electrical systems and cockpit environment technician.  For 6 years she was assigned to the 89 FMS responsible for maintaining Air Force One and later was assigned to a Special Operations Unit in Okinawa Japan.

Born and raised in Louisiana, she and her husband now live in south Alabama and enjoy the company of their adult children and grandson (with a granddaughter on the way!).  Angela is a self-taught bookbinder and book artist and dabbles in visual journaling for her own health and well-being.  Her cats, Buffy and Zander are only mildly spoiled.
