Joseph Gaston
University of South Alabama

Dr. Joe Gaston began his career in education as a paraprofessional working with elementary special needs students. After obtaining his master's degree from Spring Hill College, he spent six years teaching math and science to fourth and fifth grade students in the Mobile county public school system. Developing an interest in educational technologies, Joe took a district position with the department of instructional technology where he was able to provide assistance to other teachers with classroom technology integration. After completing his doctorate in educational technology from the University of West Florida in 2015, Joe began working part-time for the University of South Alabama as an adjunct instructor, later accepting a full-time position as an assistant professor in 2018. In this role, he teaches courses for the college of education's educational technology master's program, as well as the edtech course for pre-service undergraduates.

Joe is currently the host of two podcast series titled Next in Ed and Sincerely, South respectively. Next in Ed is a collaborative effort between his department at South and the local public school system. This podcast series was launched in April of 2020 in an effort to capture stories regarding the impact of the pandemic on education. With almost 75 published episodes, the podcast continues to feature individuals who are both passionate about education and have an idea of what's coming next. The Sincerely, South podcast is a new endeavor produced by South's College of Education and Professional Studies and focuses on stories that reflect the core values of the college, such as professional excellence, lifelong learning and civil discourse.

Joe's research interests primarily focus on the meaningful integration of technology into the learning environment and the impact these technologies have on collaboration, interest, understanding, and community. Joe has presented his research at AECT on several occasions including Jacksonville, Las Vegas, and most recently in Chicago, and has had an article published in Tech Trends.
