Nicola Pallitt

Rhodes University


Dr Nicola Pallitt coordinates the efforts of the Educational Technology Unit in the Centre for Higher Education Research, Teaching and Learning (CHERTL) at Rhodes University in Makhanda, South Africa. She offers professional development opportunities for academics to use technology effectively in their roles as educators and provides learning design support and consultation around blended and online teaching and learning. She is passionate about supporting others to design online materials and create opportunities to enable meaningful, inclusive and memorable learning experiences.  Nicola supervises postgraduate students and co-teaches on formal courses in Higher Education. She is an active and networked scholar whose research aims to expand critical perspectives on educational technologies in Higher Education. Nicola is also part of national professional organisations, the Higher Education Learning and Teaching Association of Southern Africa (HELTASA) and UP2U. Internationally, Nicola supports the Networked Learning Conference, Higher Education Close-Up conference (HECU 9) and the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT) convention.

Nicola is a core team member of e/merge Africa, on online professional development network for Educational Technology practitioners and researchers in Africa. e/merge Africa became affiliated with the AECT in 2016. Nicola has been an AECT member since 2016 and joined the Culture, Learning and Technology (CLT) Division Board in 2020, with the portfolio of special projects. Part of this work involved participating in and supporting the (IRCEES) international, cross-cultural research collaborative. The International Research Collaborative for Established and Emerging Scholars (IRCEES) in Educational Technology is a collective of researchers and practitioners based in Africa and the United States. This initiative started in 2017 as a collaboration between e/merge Africa and the CLT Division. Mentors and mentees with diverse backgrounds (expertise, interests, age, workplace experiences, and so forth) are geographically separated and engage online.
