My name is Tutaleni I. Asino. I am an Associate Professor of Educational Technology at Oklahoma State University where I also serve as the Director of the Emerging Technologies and Creativity Research Lab. I am a past president of the CLT division where I have served as a conference planner as well as co-edited a TechTrends issues focusing on Culture, Learning, and Technology. My service in AECT began at my first AECT conference in 2009 which led to me being elected as president of the Graduate Students Assembly. I was also selected as the Cochran intern for the 2012 convention and helped facilitate AECT’s affiliation with eLearning Africa and e/Merge Africa.
I am running for the CLT AECT Board Representative to continue ensuring that culture and varied cultural voices are celebrated as a critical component in AECT. I became involved in CLT because of a question that has occupied my mind for years:
“If culture is everything, why do we often treat it as an add-on or an afterthought when it comes to matter of learning, design, and technology?”
I am excited that CLT provides a space to explore this and many other questions as well as bring into the association many diverse, marginalised and often absent voices. My research and practice center around equity and representation. I explore issues such as:
• the role of culture in the development, design and evaluation of learning technologies,
• contextually appropriate learning technologies,
• Comparative International Education, and
• Indigenous Knowledge
These research areas have produced scholarly output that is relevant to several geographical spaces such as: Namibia, Botswana, Turkey, Mexico, India and Taiwan, thus providing true acknowledgement that
Culture does matter
If selected, I look forward to serving as the representative to the AECT Board with thorough consideration to all CLT members.
