Kevin Oliver

North Carolina State University


Dr. Kevin Oliver received his Ph.D. (1999) in Instructional Technology from the University of Georgia under the supervision of Michael Hannafin. He has served on the Learning, Design, and Technology (LDT) faculty at North Carolina State University since 2005, receiving promotions from assistant to full Professor. He was selected as a 1997 AECT Conference Intern, has presented at eight AECT conferences, has received publication awards from AECT’s Division of Distance Learning and Design and Development Division, has published in Educational Technology Research and Development and Tech Trends, and has served on the Editorial Board of ETR&D since 2006. Dr. Oliver has received more than $3 million in funded research investigating student acquisition of cultural and scientific outcomes in technology-rich distant (online/abroad) and informal learning settings.

He has published in numerous journals focused on distance education (Journal of Online Learning Research, International Review of Research in Open and Distance Learning, Distance Education, Quarterly Review of Distance Education) and is currently co-editing a Springer book on Online Learning in Math Education to be published in 2021. He has chaired thirteen dissertation committees to completion with eight of those students researching distance education topics such as the emergence of online learning communities and patterns of peer interaction. At NC State, Dr. Oliver receives an administrative supplement to coordinate distance and remote learning initiatives for the College of Education, including preparing a monthly newsletter, convening a task force, promoting online course quality based on QM standards, and supporting new distance and remote learning research with an emphasis on open research. He has served in coordinator roles for different LDT programs at NC State (undergraduate, certificate, master’s, doctoral), helped to develop two fully online programs (analytics certificate, master’s in LDT), and has taught eight different online courses including a doctoral-level course on Theory and Research in Distance Education.
