Tonia Dousay

University of Idaho


Dr. Tonia A. Dousay is an associate professor of learning sciences in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction at the University of Idaho. She also serves as the associate dean for accreditation & assessment and coordinates the secondary science education program. She teaches in hybrid, online, and traditional contexts to support science methods, K-12 learning contexts, doctoral studies, instructional design, and graduate research methods.

Tonia previously taught at the University of Wyoming and James Madison University, and often consults with other institutions and government agencies on distance learning and using technology equitably. She actively collaborates with STEM disciplines to brainstorm innovative ways to use, teach, and create with technology, impacting education at all levels and in all contexts. Her current research focuses on reducing barriers to STEM disciplines with virtual learning experiences, the role of self-perceptions of creativity and skill proficiency on engagement, and innovative practicum experiences for preservice teachers.

Beginning her AECT leadership journey as a President of GSA (2010), Tonia has served as the Addie Kinsinger Internship Program Coordinator (2013-2016) and is a Past President of the Division of Distance Learning. She assisted with co-planning the AECT 2014 International Convention in Jacksonville, FL and is the co-planner for AECT 2021 to be held in Columbus, OH. As the primary connection between the AECT Board and Division of Distance Learning, Tonia plans to ensure open communication, bringing transparency to processes and engaging leaders and members in critical discussions aimed at keeping the organization moving forward and ensuring the needs of all are met.
