Distance Learning
President Elect

Gamze Ozogul
Indiana University

I am Gamze Ozogul. I am an Associate Professor of Instructional Systems and Technology Department at Indiana University, School of Education. Upon completing my Ph.D. at Arizona State in Educational Technology in 2006, I completed my postdoc in Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering. Later, I was the Associate Director of Measurement and Evaluation, at Arizona State University Teachers College. In 2013, I joined the IST department at IU as an Assistant Professor. My expertise focuses on instructional design, development, and evaluation of online, computer-based, and face-to-face learning environments.

In my research, I operationalize instructional design and development principles, apply these principles to various pre-college and higher education settings in different delivery modalities, and investigate students’ outcomes for learning, retention, and perceptions. I am currently the PI for an NSF grant studying individualized feedback through artificial intelligence in explanation-based large courses.  I am also a dedicated instructor, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in both online and face-to-face settings. I was nominated by my students and received three university-wide mentoring awards from IU.

I also serve on the Scientific Advisory Council of the Red Cross since 2018 as a board member. I been serving to Red Cross by reviewing existing policies and providing guidance on online and in-person training design and development for laypersons, for them to acquire skills and knowledge to perform in crisis or emergency situations. While at IU, I have been serving as a leader in many capacities, including the Chair of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee, the chair of Faculty Development Committee for the School of Education, and completed the School of Education leadership development program.

I have been a member of AECT since 2003, and a member of Distance Learning Division since it was established. I will be honored to serve as the president. If given the opportunity, I would like to focus on three major areas while furthering the initiatives built by our previous and current DDL leaders and members; 1) keep working on creating an open and inclusive environment for all DDL members to contribute and work together on DDL division’s goals, research and scholarship, 2) emphasize the diversity of  our members in DDL division, identify ways to support various voices and representations in DDL, and in AECT 3) keep building on and supporting the established mentorship program, possibly expanding it to peer-mentoring (or support) for mid-career members.
