Design and Development
President Elect

Sanghoon Park
University of South Florida

My name is Sanghoon Park, assistant professor in the Instructional Technology program at the University of South Florida (USF). For the last 18 years since 2001, I have been an active member of AECT and had an honor to serve in various capacities including 2018 AECT program planning committee member & KSET program planner, 2015 AECT-LKAOE review board member, 2004 Design and Development (D&D) competition finalist, and 2004 Cochran intern, in addition to regularly delivering presentations and attending the AECT summer symposiums. I also have been rigorously involved in various learning technology D&D projects. For example, my colleagues and I developed an online course with gamification strategies using a superhero theme and further evaluated its’ effectiveness through the analysis of course evaluation and engagement. For this design effort, the project was awarded the AECT-Crystal award in 2018. Also, I worked in an interdisciplinary research team at USF to design and develop an innovative flipped learning course for undergraduate engineering students. This design case was shared at the D&D showcase in 2016, and the resulting paper was later ranked #5 in the list of 10 must-read research papers selected from 65 articles by the flipped learning magazine (August, 2018). In addition, my team designed and developed the Augmented Reality-Pedagogical Agent (ARPA) mobile learning system consisting of five 3D printed kinetic learning cubes, augmented reality digital content, pedagogical agents, and mobile devices, which aims to promote mobile immersive learning in STEM education. The AR-PA mobile learning system was shared at the AECT emerging technology showcase in 2017 and later registered at the Technology Transfer Office at USF. As a former D&D competition finalist (2004, Chicago), I have worked with our graduate students to participate in the AECT D&D Competitions. Two teams of our doctoral students advanced to the final round in 2016, and one team won the 2017 competition.

These past experiences have provided me invaluable opportunities to work with many researchers and practitioners in the field of D&D. Now, it is my great honor to run for the President-Elect position of the D&D division for 2019-2020. The primary mission of the D&D division is “to promote the quality and effectiveness of teaching and learning through the acquisition and application of the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to design, develop, and evaluate instructional materials and technologies” (AECT division Web page). If elected to serve as President-Elect for 2019-2020, I will strive to accomplish the D&D goals and efforts by encouraging active communication, sharing best D&D cases/practices, and promoting collaborative D&D research initiatives among the division members. We might encounter some difficulties along the way, yet I strongly believe we have great potentials to level up ourselves with rapidly advancing technologies and innovation.

Thank you very much for listening!
