Candidate Statement:
As a designer, educator and researcher, being aware of the personas, activities and
communities where learning problems occur and are [re]solved, is key to the success of this
field. Using perspectives and lenses to then engage, manipulate, design and research how
tools support changes in behaviour is my research focus because it aligns with my personal
belief system that differences should be celebrated. If re-elected as the AECT’s Culture,
Learning and Technology (CLT) Division board representative, I can continue to experience,
share my views and collaborate with others as this intersection is vibrant with new and
differing meanings from a membership and ultimately a learner’s point of view.

This division has a foundational link with all of the other divisions in that all research is
characterised by the context in which it occurs. The CLT division strives to unpack this
context as such awareness qualifies the value of how knowledge is acquired and then
conveyed. My knowledge and experiences are what I offer to the CLT Division and include
the following:

I have more than 15 years of experience in the educational technology and [project]
management fields with specific expertise in online education, instructional design,
usability evaluation and software development. My most recent research experiences
include:
• individual differences in the simulated environments,
• emotional responses towards learning
• creating value systems in online learning communities

I have evaluated, [re]designed, delivered and implemented instructional and noninstructional solutions that address the needs of a diverse body of learners, academics
and designers. My own diversity is shaped by me working and living in five countries,
across three continents in academia, industry, government and non-profit. I am originally
from Trinidad and Tobago, earned my PhD in Information Science and Learning
Technologies from the University of Missouri, USA, and at present, I am an academic at
the University of Melbourne in Australia. I hold many certifications two of which are the
project management professional (PMP) and a six-sigma yellow belt and I am also an
Organisation of American States (OAS) and Fulbright Scholar.

If re-elected, my plan for the next three years is to continue to capture and share with
AECTs Board of Directors, the belief systems of the CLT membership, to encourage more
awareness towards activity. I strongly believe in the CLT’s Division mission and vision and
ensuring that the alignment between the membership, the CLT division and the organisation
is maintained and sustained is my ultimate goal.
