Sungwoong Lee
Emporia State University

I am currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Instructional Design at Emporia State University, starting in August 2016. I am a broadly trained researcher in Game Studies, with a specialization in scaffolding in game-based learning and virtual world design for learning purposes. My dissertation addresses how educational games, by providing various types of learning supports, promote the acquisition and application of conceptual understanding in order to enhance mathematical problem solving in the formal educational context. Specifically, I investigated the effects of representation format (i.e., pictorial vs. text representation) on math problem solving skills in the domain of conceptual understanding.

I have conducted design-based research in two areas: scaffolding learning in virtual worlds such as simulation and game environments, and applying new technologies to the classroom setting. I explored the applications and effects of the virtual world on learning with diverse subjects, including students who met normal developmental milestones as well as special-needs students such as children with autism. I am contributing to two research projects as a researcher: Earthquake Rebuild - Mathematical Thinking and Learning via Architectural Design and Modeling and Virtual-Reality-Based Social Skills Training for Children with Asperger’s Syndrome. Currently, I have started a new research project to enhance preservice teachers’ computational thinking in a makerspace environment.

I am very interested in serving as a Board Member of Design and Development Division. As the D&D Board Member, I will dedicate myself to collaborating with D&D Board Member’s leadership to advance our D&D’s performance and goal. It would be an honor for me to serve the Design and Development Board Member position!
